Austrian students win the final of the largest European financial literacy competition

The Portuguese Banking Association (APB) participated for the 7th time in the final of the largest European financial literacy competition, held on April 19 in Brussels.

According to information from the EBF, Austria, the Czech Republic, and North Macedonia emerged as the top winners of the 2024 edition of the European Money Quiz (EMQ).

The 2024 EMQ involved around 36,000 students from across Europe and 2,200 schools from 26 countries: Albania, Germany, Austria, Estonia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, North Macedonia, Malta, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Czech Republic, Romania, Serbia, and Ukraine.

In Portugal, this edition of the EMQ set a participation record, involving 5,000 students from 60 schools nationwide. The national winners representing Portugal in the European final were Enzo Guimarães and Luís Miranda from Escola de Arões Santa Cristina in Braga.

During their two days in Brussels, the students visited the EBF headquarters, the European Parliament, WikFinLab, Euronext, and met peers from other countries and cultures. Accompanying them were a representative from APB and their teacher Isabel Sousa, who emphasized the importance of addressing financial literacy early in schools.

As Wim Mijs, CEO of the EBF, stated, "By developing their financial skills early, with the support of teachers, young people gain a significant competitive advantage for their adult lives."

The EBF and European Banking Associations take pride in bringing together young people, teachers, and experts for a fun and energetic learning experience in Brussels, year after year.

The EMQ, created by the European Banking Federation in 2018, challenges young Europeans aged 13 to 15 to demonstrate their financial literacy. This year’s questions were aligned with OECD/INFE guidelines for strengthening financial competencies, covering budgeting, saving, credit, digital banking, sustainability, and online security.

The APB, a member of the European Banking Federation, has participated in this initiative since its first edition.
