The APB, as representative of the Portuguese banking sector, is participating in the World Savings Day commemorations. This year the commemorations will be devoted to financial education and organised by PNFF. They will take place at Pátio da Galé, Terreiro do Paço, Lisbon from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on 31 October.

Programme

Financial Training Day is an occasion for the partners of National Financial Education Plan (PNFF) to get together to raise public awareness of the importance of financial literacy. The chosen date for the event is World Savings Day, 31 October.

As the representative of the banking sector in the PNFF, the APB will participate in the initiative in Lisbon. It will offer a space and experiences based on the Good Practices, Good Accounts Project, which is part of the sector's financial education strategy and will organise activities related to financial literacy.

The PNFF was developed by the National Financial Supervisors' Board and involves three supervisors – Banco de Portugal, the Portuguese Securities Market Commission and the “Instituto de Seguros de Portugal”. It also enjoys the collaboration of ministries, financial sector associations, consumer associations, trade unions and universities.

Financial Training Day will be commemorated in Lisbon and Porto. The activities in Lisbon will take place at Pátio da Galé, while in Porto they will be held at Fundação Dr. António Cupertino de Miranda (Paper Currency Museum) and at Porto University's Economics Faculty.

APB stand – Good Practices, Good Accounts

Two actors from Teatro Independente de Oeiras will act out small dialogues in situations exemplifying the financial reality in Portuguese households' where savings and family budget management are concerned. The scene is a Portuguese home, thereby giving the audience access to realistic situations in the family's everyday life. This interactive approach will involve asking participants to share ideas about savings and take part in financial screening. All visitors will be invited to write their savings ideas on a post-it and stick it on a savings mural. There will be surprises for the best ideas. There will also be a touch-screen quiz, with questions and answers about bank products and services, allowing visitors assess their financial culture.

On the main stage

From 4 to 4.30 p.m. the magician Mário Daniel will be putting on a show tailored to the event with great visual sensations. Some of the illusions in the performance will be based on the savings theme and will use real notes and coins. This one-man show involves plenty of interaction with the audience. Mário Daniel will be making an appearance at the APB stand right after the show.

Sector's financial education strategy

The APB announced the sector's financial education strategy at the beginning of this year. It includes nationwide financial literacy programmes shared by all banks and divided into fields of action. The aim is to improve financial culture resulting in better use of financial products and services and a more transparent relationship between banks and society.

The APB's main goal was to set out a common strategy for the sector with integrated, coordinated actions and align it with the PNFF national strategy targets of the National Board of Financial Supervisors. The APB is planning to develop nationwide financial literacy programmes shared by all banks and divided into fields of action. All socioeconomic and age groups will be covered: children, young people, students, families, seniors, vulnerable people, teachers, entrepreneurs and business associations.

An important aspect of this strategy has been short and medium-term training courses for journalists and in partnership with the Directorate-General for Consumers, for practitioners at the CIACs - Municipal Consumer Information Centres.

The following financial institutions are participating in this APB/IFB project:

Banco BIC Português, Banco BPI, Banco BIG – Banco de Investimento Global, Banco Popular Portugal, Banco Santander Totta, BANIF – Banco Internacional do Funchal, Barclays Bank, BES – Banco Espirito Santo, CCCAM – Caixa Central de Crédito Agrícola Mútuo, CGD – Caixa Geral de Depósitos and Millennium BCP.
