Associação Portuguesa de Bancos (Portuguese Bank Association) and MEP Elisa Ferreira organise conference in Lisbon

The conference Building a New Financial Architecture organised by MEP Prof. Elisa Ferreira and Associação Portuguesa de Bancos was attended today by a number of European specialists from the financial sector and European Parliament. They discussed the Capital Requirements Directive and the proposed amendments to it and the new system for financial supervision and cross-border crisis management in the banking sector.

The first panel, EU Financial Supervisory Architecture, was moderated by Prof. Ferreira and discussed the future of the financial supervisory architecture in the European Union, especially the new European financial supervisory system and the new European systemic risk assessment system.

The second panel, The Banking Sector and Cross-Border Crisis Management, was moderated by Prof Pedro Duarte Neves, Vice-Governor of Banco de Portugal. It discussed the structure of the banking sector in general and its internationalisation in particular and the importance of this in the management of major financial crises.

The last panel, New Regulatory Requirements, was moderated by Prof. António de Sousa, President of the APB and discussed the new equity requirements, which would soon oblige banks to increase their capital, and the impact of these measures on the Portuguese financial system. The panel made a significant contribution to the current public discussion of the new Capital Requirements Directive.

The opening session was chaired by the Minister of State and Finance, Fernando Teixeira dos Santos and the closing session by the Secretary of State for the Treasury and Finance, Carlos Costa Pina. The conference was attended by the Governor of Banco de Portugal, Vítor Constâncio, the Chairman of the Stock Exchange Commission, Carlos Tavares, the President of the CEIOPS, Gabriel Bernardino, the people in charge of the reports on the OMNIBUS directives and the European Banking Authority, other MEPs, high officials from the European Commission and directors of Portuguese and foreign financial institutions.
